21A- Reading Reflection #2

Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky

  1. The general theme of this book is that the internet allows us to become active members in creating great things that require multiple people collaborating. However in our society, we spend so many hours participating in passive activities that produce no growth like watching TV. Active participation by multiple people will allow us to take on tasks we never thought were possible and thus gives us a cognitive surplus.
  2. I think this directly connects to what we are doing and learning in ENT3003 because I have learned not only in my idea but also through lectures at just how important the concept of active communities make in solving issues and creating great things. Not one person can accomplish these tasks and technology and the internet have done a great job bringing all of us together.
  3. I believe the exercise that I would recommend would be to solve an issue or create a solution as a group without face to face interaction. Yes, it seems very unconventional but I believe our society has developed so much technologically that this exercise would show at our capabilities that we have come to.
  4. I think the thing that really stood out to me was the fact that we have no excuse for not connecting with others with our ideas or whatever we do. The world is at our fingertips and by participating in passive activities like watching TV or not being part of a connected community, the damage is done not only to ourselves but to our society.

  1. I think this speaks volumes about a lot of the things we waste our time on every day. Instead of making the most of the time we have, we spend a lot of it on things like social media, TV, or excessive sleep. We may be more connected now than ever, but our electronics shouldn't consume the majority of our daily lives. I agree with what you said about active communities being the one's to solve problems and create great things. It goes to show what we can do when we put our time to good use.

  2. I find myself wasting time on my computer and phone every day. I like the exercise you described because it is important to engage yourself in life and attempt to communicate with the people around you. Entrepreneurs should be comfortable with initiating conversations and speaking with others. Passive activities definitely waste time; however, most people don't realize how much time they're wasting when they play on their phone or sit down to watch tv. I think this bring awareness to the importance of engaging in life and interacting with others.

  4. Hey Anthony,

You bring up a great point on how people don't always utilize the technologies they're given to their full extent. I also think the added benefits you get from collaborative thinking compared to individual thinking is a lot more because of the wide array of perspectives used in collaborative thinking. New technologies like skype, facetime, and google docs makes this type of thinking easier to do.

  5. Hey Anthony,

While this wasn't the same book I read, I can see some of the parallels with this one and the one that I read. I fully agree that the theme of the book you read almost entirely translates to what it is we are doing in this course. We are all brought together here by the internet. That being said, your idea for an exercise for this course is very interesting and something I'd be willing to do.
